How To Get Rid of Dark Circles Under Eyes: 13 Tips for Brighter Eyes

Read on

Dark circles and puffy eyes can develop from any number of things ranging from not getting enough sleep, to allergies, to genetics.

Everyone wants to head out looking fresh and rested, and even if you haven’t been getting the best sleep recently, there may still be things you can do to keep those eyes bright.

1. Prop up with an extra pillow

Sleeping on your back and giving your head a little elevation with another pillow may help prevent unwanted extra fluid building up under your eyes and causing that puffy look.

2. Look into retinoids

Dark circles under the eyes can occur from the skin being so thin that blood vessels can be seen underneath.

Ask your dermatologist about creams with retinoids that can help thicken up that skin.

Strut Anti-Aging Formula contains Tretinoin, a prescription-only retinoid medicated cream.

3. Tame those allergies

If your eyes are looking worn out from allergies and the itchy eyes that come along with it, do your eyes a favor and take a daily antihistamine to keep those allergies under control.

4. Try a cool compress

A cool or cold compress helps flush out extra fluids under the eyes as well as constricts those under-the-skin vessels causing that dark hue.

Try a cool cloth, or keep a few spoons in your freezer for a quick cool down.

5. Slice up some cucumbers

Cucumber slices contain lots of water, Vitamin C, and silica - making them a perfect pampering treat for tired undereye skin.

When you are making a salad, slice off two extra rounds for a quick skin pick-me-up.

6. Tackle eye hyperpigmentation

If your dark circles are not caused by extra color coming up from under your skin, but from the skin itself being a darker color than the rest of your face, you might have something called periorbital hyperpigmentation.

Periorbital hyperpigmentation is often a genetic thing, so there may not be any simple lifestyle changes to help out significantly.

But, there are many creams out of the market that may help gently lighten hyperpigmented areas.

Vitamin C and Kojic Acid are popular and gentle skin lighteners that may fade darkened patches of skin.

And, as always, with anything applied around the eye area be careful to avoid getting the product in your eye.

Strut Brightly formula is a compounded brightening formula with Vitamin C that may help with dark and uneven patches of skin.

7. Get those 8 hours

Sometimes what you actually need to look less tired is to, well, be less tired.

Try to make getting your full 8 hours nightly a priority if possible, as even the best concealers can only do so much.

Have a set sleep and wake schedule that you can follow religiously (even on the weekends), and your bright eyes will thank you for it.

8. Get your face massaged

Whether you follow a great facial massage youtube video, or you treat yourself to an extensive facial, you need to get that blood flowing.

A gentle face massage helps everything circulate properly, and that means clearing out puffiness from your under eyes as well as the rest of your face.

For a quick mini massage, take extra care when applying your moisturizer, gently massaging upwards and outwards for the best results.

9. Antioxidants inside and out

Vitamins C and E are potent antioxidants that are great for you daily, as well as applying to your face.

Topical products with antioxidants may help stave away darkened undereye areas in cream, serum, or face mask form.

10. Cut out the smokes

Smoking can wreak havoc on your skin, buy introducing toxins, dehydrating it, and causing overall dullness and puffiness.

If you think your undereye circles might be being caused or worsened by your smoking habit, you are probably right.

Add brighter and less puffy eyes to the list of reasons why you need to quit smoking asap.

11. Look into fillers

For some, the cause of dark circles or bags under the eyes might just be the normal aging process.

As we age, the skin thins, collagen lessens, and the fat tissue under the eye tends to go away.

If you have tried every trick in the book but your eyes are still more sunken in than you would like, you may benefit from a quick and easy procedure that injects fillers under your eyes to plump out the area.

12. Skip the salt

If you find that your eyes are puffier and harder to tame the day after you try out the newest ramen restaurant or order that large popcorn, you might be dealing with a salt-related puff.

Keep an eye on your extra salt consumption to see if your dark circles and puffiness have a salty component to them.

13. Get hydrated

This seems like an obvious one, but still many people do not drink enough water during the day.

Not drinking enough water can leave your eyes sunken in and looking darker than usual.

Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to make sure your eye issues aren’t hydration related.
