Read on

Anyone who has looked into hair loss treatments has likely come across these 2 medications: Finasteride and Minoxidil. Finasteride and Minoxidil are currently the only two FDA-approved male pattern hair loss treatments.

And, when looking into studies for hair loss using these medications, it may be difficult to decide which one may be the best for you.

Finasteride is better at reducing additional hair losses, but Minoxidil is better at increasing the regrowth -- how do you choose?

So, is it possible and safe to just use both of these male pattern hair loss medications together?

Read on to learn more about Finasteride and Minoxidil, and figure out if they just might be even stronger when used together.

What does Finasteride do for hair loss?

Finasteride is commonly found in tablet form in the brand medication, Propecia, or it can sometimes be found in prescription topical hair loss formulas put together by compounding pharmacies.

Finasteride is a DHT blocker medication, so this means that it can help reduce levels of DHT in and around your scalp area.

This is a great thing for men who want to maintain their current hair since DHT can cause hair follicles to shrink and eventually progress to the loss of the follicle.

Basically, Finasteride is the gold standard treatment for men who are noticing thinning and want a medication that helps them maintain the hair they currently have, slow down losses, and maybe even regrow some hair.

What does Minoxidil do for hair loss?

Minoxidil is the active ingredient inside the popular over the counter hair loss medication, Rogaine.

Minoxidil is approved for hair loss treatment in both men and women, and can be found in different strengths and formulas over the counter.

This is a topical medication, so it gets applied directly to the scalp in the form of a cream, foam, or gel -- no pills involved here.

Minoxidil is thought to help with the increased growth of hair by dilating the vessels in the scalp and allowing additional oxygen and nutrients to flood the hair follicles.

The main function of Minoxidil is to boost hair growth, and may help regrow hair that was lost (if the follicle is not too far gone).

Can Finasteride and Minoxidil be used together safely?

After learning more about just how these medications work for hair loss and what they can do, you may have trouble deciding which direction sounds more appealing.

Well, it turns out that you may not need to choose at all, and if it is ok with your doctor, you are likely safe using both Finasteride and Minoxidil together for hair loss.

These medications work on very different targets for hair loss, Finasteride blocks DHT, while Minoxidil increased blood flow, so there is little to no risk of interaction or overlap between the two.

However, you will still need to speak with a doctor before starting these medications to make sure that they do not interact with any additional condition you may have or other medication that you are currently using.

Finasteride plus Minoxidil studies

Studies have shown that it is not only safe to use these medications together, but that using Finasteride along with Minoxidil may lead to more hair loss benefits than just using each medication separately.

One study had 45 men use a combination topical formulation of both Finasteride and Minoxidil, and found that 84.44% of the men maintained a good hair density with treatment.

Using a combination compounded topical product like this may also be simpler and easier for men, since they will only need to use one product containing both Finasteride and Minoxidil as opposed to one topical product (Minoxidil) and one tablet (Finasteride).
